Whole Baby Squid Recipe | Spicy Baby Calamari Curry With Coconut

Ingredients
  • Baby squid/calamari - 250g
  • Onion - 50g
  • Thin coconut milk - 200ml
  • Thin tamarind juice - 100ml
  • Curry powder - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic paste - 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger paste - ½ teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - Few
  • Turmeric powder - ¼ teaspoon
  • Fenugreek seeds - ¼ teaspoon
  • Salt - As you need
  • Cooking oil - As you need
Instructions
  1. Take the baby squids and rinse it well. Every baby squids have ink containers inside their body part. So, wash it carefully until removing all the black ink containers. (Refer Note 1)
  2. Chop the onions. Crush the garlic and ginger to paste. Get ready with curry leaves, salt, fenugreek seeds, turmeric powder, and curry powder. (Refer Note 2)
  3. Extract thin coconut milk from grated coconut and get ready with thin tamarind juice. (Refer Note 3)
  4. Heat the oil in the cooking pan. Add onions and sauté it until it gets soft and translucent.
  5. Add curry leaves and fenugreek seeds. Stir and cook until the onions turn into light golden color.
  6. Add ginger and garlic paste. Stir and cook for 30 seconds.
  7. Add the baby squids and mix everything well. (Refer Note 4)
  8. Cook covered under medium flame for 3 to 5 minutes.
  9. Take off the lid, stir and cook uncovered under medium flame until all the liquid disappears. For me, it takes about 2 minutes.
  10. Add turmeric powder, salt, and curry powder.
  11. Now add tamarind juice.
  12. Add coconut milk and mix everything well.
  13. Cook covered under the high flame for 3 to 5 minutes.
  14. Take off the lid, stir and mix everything. Again cook covered under low flame for 2 to 4 minutes.
  15. Taste the curry and adjust salt if needed.
  16. Serve and enjoy this Sri Lankan style spicy whole baby squid recipe with coconut milk.
Notes
Note 1: If you want the whole squid curry, you should give a good attention when washing the baby squids. Because the head part easily comes off from the baby squid’s body.

Note 2: Basically, Sri Lankans like to eat spicy foods. If you don’t like more spiciness, reduce the amount of curry powder.

Note 3: If it is hard to find grated coconut, you can use coconut milk powder or bottled coconut milk.

Note 4: Give a good attention when you stir and mix throughout the whole process. Stir and mix gently to avoid the head part get off from the squid’s body.
