Ingredients
  • Beef - 500g
  • Potatoes - 250g
  • Basmati rice - 350g
  • Onion - 100g
  • Green chili - 6 to 8
  • Garlic clove - 4 to 6
  • Ginger root - Small (About the size of 1 garlic clove)
  • Thick coconut milk - 300ml
  • Curry leaves - Few
  • Fennel seeds - 1 tablespoon
  • Cumin seeds - ½ teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1 tablespoon
  • Coriander seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - ½ teaspoon
  • Cardamom - 6 to 8
  • Crushed cinnamon - ½ tablespoon
  • Salt - As you need
  • Cooking oil - As you need
Instructions
  1. Take the beef and cut into medium-sized pieces. Rinse them well and keep aside.
  2. Take the grinder and add black pepper, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, garlic cloves, ginger, and a little water. Also, get ready with turmeric powder and salt.
  3. Grind them to smooth paste.
  4. Now add turmeric powder, salt, and ground mixture to the beef.
  5. Mix well and let them marinate for at least an hour.
  6. Chop the onion, cut the green chilies by half, and crush the cinnamon. Also, get ready with curry leaves and cardamom. Besides, extract the thick coconut milk from grated coconut.
  7. Slice the potatoes into medium size. Also, get ready with basmati rice.
  8. Heat the oil, add cardamom and cinnamon. Sauté them for 10 to 20 seconds. I suggest you use a large non-stick cooking pot with a lid.
  9. Now add the onions, curry leaves, and green chilies. Fry them under high flame until the onion starts to turn a golden color. Stir occasionally to avoid burn. For me, it takes about 3 minutes.
  10. Add the marinated beef and mix them well. Cook covered under the high flame for 6 to 8 minutes.
  11. Take off the lid and add potatoes. Now add the coconut milk and mix them well. Also, taste the curry and adjust salt if needed.
  12. Cook covered under medium flame until you get a well-cooked beef with little gravy. For me, it takes about 15 minutes.
  13. While you cook the beef, wash the basmati rice and boil it. It is enough to boil the rice for 90%.
  14. Once the rice 90% done, strain the water and add all the rice on top of the beef curry. Spread it evenly.
  15. Finally, cook covered under very low flame for 6 to 8 minutes.
  16. Switch off the flame and mix everything well until all combined.
  17. This is how to make Sri Lankan beef biryani recipe with potatoes. Serve and enjoy this delicious Sri Lankan style beef biryani.
Notes
1. I used the beef with bones, but you can use the boneless beef.
2. If you don’t like spiciness, reduce the amount of black pepper and the number of green chilies.
3. If it is hard to find grated coconut, use the coconut milk powder or bottled coconut milk.
